main(12)

First, people battled for toilet rolls then they snapped up baking supplies.

Now, it’s bicycles that are going gangbusters amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It proves that if you were ever going to take up a new hobby, now really is the time. Bicycles Online provided 7NEWS with some extraordinary figures, showing just how much the bike buying trend is sweeping the nation.

In their sales figures since mid-March, they have seen a 302 per cent in total purchases compared to the same period last year.

These include sales of bicycles, bicycle parts and accessories.

“At current sales velocity, we should see more than 2,000 complete bikes sold online in the month of April,” Bicycles Online revealed.

“This is more than double same period last year.” So, what are people buying? There’s been a whopping 267 per cent increase in the city (urban/commuter bikes) purchased as people look for alternatives to public transport.

There has also been a 170 per cent jump in mountain bike sales and a 156 per cent increase in bikes for children.

“It’s nothing like we’ve ever experienced at this time of year, which is usually much quieter,” said James Van Rooyen, Director and co-founder of Bicycles Online.

“Sales are exceeding what we would expect to see at Christmas.”
